History

A legacy of innovation and engineering excellence

The origins of STRABAG SE lie in two strong foundations: an Austrian family‑run craftsmen’s enterprise from 1835 and a German company established in 1895, whose name would later inspire the STRABAG brand. Through continuous innovation, expansion and strategic acquisitions, the group has evolved into one of Europe’s most versatile and forward‑looking construction companies.

Ed. Züblin AG was founded in Strasbourg in 1898 by Swiss engineer Eduard Züblin, a pioneer in reinforced concrete and modern construction methods. The company soon established itself as a technical trailblazer and continued its development from Stuttgart from 1919 onwards. Today, as part of the STRABAG Group, Ed. Züblin AG is recognised for high‑end engineering and excellence in complex building projects.

STRABAG and ZÜBLIN have been active in Luxembourg since 1905, beginning with reinforced concrete works for a bank as well as for the growing steel industry in Esch-sur-Alzette and Schifflange. Over time, these early engineering activities expanded into a wide portfolio of infrastructure, environmental and real‑estate projects. The establishment of STRABAG Luxembourg SARL in 2025 marks a new chapter in more than a century of local engagement.

Important milestones in Luxembourg

Historic and construction milestones

2025
STRABAG's activities in Luxembourg continue under the Luxembourg company STRABAG LUXEMBOURG SARL. A new entity is born! The company’s registered office is situated within the MOIRÉ offices development in Belvaux, an own real estate development and construction project, which also houses the offices of SRE Luxembourg.
2024
Expansion of the biowaste digestion plant in Mondercange in Luxembourg. The project builds on the original plant constructed by STRABAG for MINETT-KOMPOST in 2011 and increases its annual treatment capacity from 30,000 tonnes to 45,000 tonnes.
2024
Completion of Résidence Luc & Léna in Belvaux. This new-build project consists of two residential blocks comprising 51 apartments, an underground car park (level -1) and additional storage facilities on level -2.
2022
Delivery of the Moiré project in Belvaux for STRABAG Real Estate: a contemporary office building with a flexible floorplan, 19 rentable units, and an underground car park offering 86 spaces and EV charging facilities.
2019
STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions implemented a fully integrated, decentralised communication system for the Police Grand-Ducale in Luxembourg. The solution includes a virtualised VoIP communication platform across five sites, 34 dispatcher workstations, connectivity to the national digital radio network RENITA via wired and wireless interfaces, integration with the emergency call system, and comprehensive system monitoring through NAGIOS. This ensures reliable, redundant and secure communication for police operations throughout the country.
2016
ZÜBLIN Timber delivered the complete timber construction package for the residential Mühlenbach new-build in Luxembourg, covering the design, structural engineering, prefabrication and installation of the timber elements. The project comprised a three-storey structure constructed with 370 m³ of LENO® cross‑laminated timber, resulting in a compact building with a gross floor area of 1,152 m². Precise workshop planning and efficient on‑site assembly ensured a smooth and timely realisation of this timber-based development.
2013
A joint venture between the tunnelling divisions of ZÜBLIN and STRABAG expanded Europe’s largest pumped-storage power plant in Vianden, Luxembourg. The integration of a new eleventh pump generator served to expand capacity by around 200 MW, allowing the plant operator Société Electrique de L’Our (SEO) to feed nearly 1,300 MW of peak electricity into the European grid.
2012
STRABAG Sportstättenbau GmbH delivered its first PPP sports project in Luxembourg with the redevelopment of the “Parc des Sports” in Differdange. As part of a long‑term public‑private partnership, STRABAG was awarded for the planning, construction and maintenance of the modern sports infrastructure, including a new grandstand building, natural and synthetic turf pitches, and a multi‑storey car park. STRABAG has delivered the biowaste digestion facility in Mondercange for MINETT-KOMPOST.  The plant includes a biogas upgrading plant to biomethane using an amine scrubber based on STRABAG's own BCM® process. Between 2011 and 2016 STRABAG was also responsible for the operational management of the biowaste digestion facility.
1960
A joint venture was established between Chaux de Contern and Züblin GmbH in Kehl/Rhine to construct a long‑distance water pipeline from the reservoir in Esch/Sauer. This project formed part of the development and expansion of infrastructure linked to the activities of Chaux de Contern. The works involved the reservoir at Esch/Sauer (Esch‑sur‑Sûre, Luxembourg), with Züblin contributing through its Kehl am Rhein branch.
